Heartless Bargain

They offered me up in front of four hundred people, and not one man came down to take me.

So two days later, my father sold me in a back room.

I am Delphine Ward. Old money, perfect manners, and a family that has run out of both. I know how every powerful man on this campus takes his tea. I have made myself useful to all of them, because a useful girl never gets sent back.

Eleven men bid on me that Sunday, and my own father calls the numbers. The last bid comes from Conrad Graves, who smiles at me like the deal is already done.

Then the doors open, and Damon Vassos walks in.

Thirty-six. Greek. Billionaire. Head of the family that owns the docks from Newark to Boston and everything that rides in the containers. When he enters a room, the most dangerous men in it lower their voices.

He makes one bid. Nobody bids against him. He doesn't even look at me.

By midnight I'm his wife. Before the night is over, I'm in his bed.

He walks me across campus with his hand on the back of my neck, in front of everyone. He makes the men who bid on me stand when I sit down. And he won't let me pour his tea, run his table, or earn my place in any way at all.

A thing you buy, you keep until it stops paying. And Graves is waiting for me on the stairs with five words: Sunday was the first bid.

He paid a fortune for me and won't let me be worth a cent of it.

So what is he keeping me for?
